Things to Do in Edinburgh This Winter

1st Jan 2025

Beat the winter blues this season with our list of the best things to do in Edinburgh. From escaping the cold to embracing the city’s history and heritage, there’s something for everyone.

1. Try an Edinburgh Underground Tour

Of all the places to visit in Edinburgh, you absolutely must see the Blair Street Underground Vaults. Not only do they offer an escape from the chilly temperatures outside, but they’re also full of interesting history and stories.

They also happen to be one of the most haunted places in Edinburgh. You might have even seen them featured on Ghost Files!

2. Celebrate the Reopening of the Georgian House

From 7th February, Edinburgh’s Georgian House will be opening to the public again after its seasonal break.

The grand townhouse is at the heart of Edinburgh’s New Town. Inside, you’ll find period furniture and decor that reflect a luxurious 18th-century lifestyle.

You can even explore its history on a special Tale o’ Twa Touns tour, where you’ll be able to compare it to the unique 16th century Gladstone’s Land.

3. Edinburgh Whisky Tasting & Tour

When it comes to a whisky tasting Edinburgh has a lot to offer. Why not try one that ties in a walking tour of whisky history, followed by an expert tasting?

You can take in the beauty of the city, learn about the history Scotland’s national drink and then warm up with a few drams in the Edinburgh underground vaults.

4. Royal Portraits: A Century of Photography

From 27 February, visit the King’s Gallery at Holyrood Palace to explore portraiture photography. This exhibition considers the role portraits play in the perception of the Royal Family.

It features 100 years of photography and includes a look behind the scenes of some of the most well-known Royal photos.

5. Curl Up With a Book

Winter is the best time to wrap up in a blanket and start a new book. Pop into our gift shop to find your next read.

We recommend Murder Ballad by Lucy Ribchester, which features our very own Blair Street Underground Vaults. Or, choose the cosier The Ghost Cat, written by former Mercat Storyteller Alex Howard.

Find us at 28 Blair Street, EH1 1QR.
